LOGIC, MATH, MANIPULATIVES

& PRETEND PLAY

LOGIC: puzzles

  • Finding the right place for each piece exercises your toddler's hand-eye coordination, improves his motor skills and develops his shape recognition - a necessary pre-reading skill.

MATH: counting/quantity, shapes, sorting, nesting toys, greater to/less than in size

  • Stacking blocks, sorting shapes, and threading chunky beads get your toddler using his ever-more nimble fingers.  These activities require great concentration too, helping your toddler to develop his thinking skills.

MANIPULATIVES:  (list)

  • The primary purpose of manipulatives is to help children develop fine motor skills and learn math concepts.  Manipulatives ultimately help children develop the muscle control they need to be able to eat with a fork or hold a pencil and write.

IMAGINATIVE PLAY:

  • Imaginative play is essentially when children are role playing and are acting out various experiences they may have had or something that is of some interest to them.  They are experimenting with decision making on how to behave and are also practicing their social skills.  Children learn from experience: from what happens around them, from what they see, hear, smell, taste and touch. To absorb those experiences and make sense of the world, they need to be engaged in imaginary play.

Bumblebee Tote

LOGIC, FINE MOTOR, MUSIC & LANGUAGE BUILDING MATERIALS

Beautiful learning materials inspired by educator Maria Montessori.

LOGIC: puzzles

  • With good logical puzzle toys children learn to bring the use of the body under the control of the will, to concentrate, to make a plan, to follow a train of thought, and to repeat and perfect. This is the foundation of creativity.

FINE MOTOR

  • Fine motor skills are coordinated small muscle movements in the hands, wrists, and fingers. Often, the eyes are used to guide the movements.  There are four specific kinds of fine motor movements that need to be mastered in order for a child to take part in the tasks of daily life: Grasping, Reaching, Releasing an Object and Turning the Wrist.

MUSIC: variety of instruments, shakers, wood, metal, drums

  • The early childhood years are crucial for using the body to respond as a musical instrument in many ways to many different kinds of music. Real musical instruments, like tools, can then become simply extensions or amplifications of the body's ability to be musically expressive.

LANGUAGE BUILDING MATERIALS: animal figurines & die-cast vehicles

  • Playing with animal figurines and die-cast vehicles is similar to old-fashioned role-play. A game with no instructions and no limits which lets the child's imagination run free: a miniature play world for little hands. Find language development activities here.
